ITINERARY

Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli

This day trip to Assisi from Rome starts with the visit of the Porziuncola, essential to understanding Francis's life and the most sacred place for the Franciscans. The Porziuncola is a 9th-century little church enclosed in the Basilica.

Santa Chiara Basilica

You will enjoy strolling around the ancient town's narrow streets to reach the Church of Santa Chiara. Its Byzantine Crucifix revealed to the Saint his mission. In this Basilica, pilgrims can venerate the mortal remains of St. Clare and pray silently in front of the Crucifix, using the Saint's words.
On the way to Piazza del Comune (Town Hall Square), you will pass the Oratorio, the birthplace of St. Francis, with the remarkable Augustan Temple of Minerva.

Basilica of Saint Francis

The main highlight of the Assisi day trip from Rome is the Basilica of Saint Francis, the goal of countless pilgrimages, whose Crypt contains the Saint's tomb. Artists from all over Italy, such as Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini, frescoed the vaulted Lower Church. The upper church walls are decorated mostly by Giotto with the Scenes of the Old and New Testament. Immersed in a spectacular environment, it is a magical place also for not-Christians.

After the tour, you will have 2 hours of free time for lunch and explore this enchanting town. The driver will be waiting for you to bring you back to your hotel in Rome.
