Named “One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World" by Trip Advisor, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal area. Thousands of years in the making, this stunning landscape is nestled within a natural bush setting through which self-guided walks take between 30 and 75 minutes. Look for the luminous green waters of the ominously named Devil’s Bath, this neon green pool of stagnant stink water is a natural wonder. The pretty trees and shrubs surrounding it make this unusually coloured pool appear even more peculiar. Back on firm ground, admire the Primrose Terraces, a set of glistening steps.
The natural bush setting, the Lady Knox Geyser erupting daily at 10.15 am and the nearby ever active "Mud Pool" add other dimensions to the experience, the distinct sulphur smell, similar to that of rotting eggs will accompany you throughout your visit to this fascinating natural wonder.
