Take a houseboat journey through Tanjung Puting National Park, known for decades of orangutan research and rehabilitation.

Cruise along the Kumai River through a dense jungle filled with primates such as orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, macaques, leopards, lizards, and more than 250 bird species. Observe orangutan feeding at Camp Leakey, an active research facility that conducts important studies into local flora and fauna. Travel by traditional Klotok, or riverboat, to visit a local riverside village and learn more about the local culture.

Orangutan Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival PAngkalan Bun
On arrival at Pangkalanbun, transfer to Kumai port and board your boat for a trip up the Kumai and Sekonyer rivers into Tanjung Puting National Park. Pass thick nipa palm thickets and jungle as you enter the orangutan habitat and enjoy dinner on board your houseboat. (L)(D)

Day 2: Camp Leakey
Cruise along the Sekonyer River to Camp Leakey, the world’s largest orangutan rehabilitation center with over 200 of the apes having been released into the forest here. See supplementary feeding of the apes at one of the camp’s feeding stations. Back on the cruise be on the lookout for monkeys and possibly more orangutans as they come to pick fruit along the riverbank. (B)(L)(D)

Day 3: Tanjung Puting
Cruise and walk into the forest, visiting Pondok Tanguy feeding station and looking out for other wildlife en route. In the afternoon cross to Harapan village and explore the settlement on foot. (B)(L)(D)

Day 4: Pangkalan Bun – Departure
Return to Pangkalanbun, disembark, and transfer back to the airport for your onward flight. (B)
