5 Days Sumatera Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Kualanamu Airport – Bohorok
Upon arrival at Kuala Namu Medan Airport (Morning Flight), meeting service with our guide and transfer to Bohorok located in the southern part of Leuser National Park. You can see Orangutans in Bukit Lawang that are trained to live in their natural habitat.

En-route proceed for Medan city tour. The visits will be at the Great Mosque with its imposing tiled archway with the royal burial ground and one may see also the tall water tower adopted as a symbol of the municipality of Medan back along the main street.

One block to the west across the single-track railway is the Sultan’s Palace; the ceremonial palace of the Sultans of Deli with its yellow trim & typical east coast Malay architecture with living quarters occupied by the Sultan’s families.

Continue to the colonial period main street called Jalan Jenderal Ahmad Yani passing the Café Tip Top; once a favorite haunt of Medan’s colonial society to the town square where we can see several colonial buildings notably the old town hall with the Grand Aston Hotel as the background, the Bank of Indonesia building (formerly the Javaasche Bank), Inna Dharma Deli Hotel, which incorporates the old DeBoer Hotel and the colonial era Post Office stands virtually unchanged.

Then proceed driving to Kampung Keling; a busy commercial center is as its names imply the original center of Medan’s Indian community with the famous high walled Sri Mariamman Temple devoted to the goddess Kali built in 1884 – the entrance is topped by a small ornamental pyramidal gateway and to the Chinese Temple where a big portion of the Chinese community in Medan still practice an esoteric form of Buddhism imbued with Taoism.

Afterward continue the journey by driving to Bukit Lawang, North Sumatera’s provincial capital would be on the road, which leads west passing through vast rubber and oil palm plantation is accessible and easily brings to Bukit Lawang; one of the main access points to the incredible rain forest of Gunung Leuser; one of Indonesia’s oldest national parks established in 1980 is covering an area of some 7,927 km² in northern Sumatra straddling the border of North Sumatra & Aceh provinces encompassing some of the most spectacular Montana and equatorial forest in Asia and well known as Orangutan Station or Orangutan Care Center.

It is one of Sumatera’s last rain forest wildernesses and its wildlife includes most of Sumatera’s extensive range of mammals and hundreds of bird species. The area is wild and enchanting with raging rivers and stunning jungle scenery. Popular activities here include trekking, rafting, and of course visiting the Orangutan at the station, which was established in 1973 to assist captive Orangutans to readjust to life in the wild and to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population. Upon arrival in Bukit Lawang, proceed to the hotel for accommodation. Free for leisure.

Day 2: Full Day Trekking – Explorer Bahorok
After breakfast at the hotel, proceed to start for a day trekking by walking up through to the surrounding rain forest that is located at the Eastern edge of Gunung Leuser National Park with a chance to observe various tropical plants including a tangle of enormous trees, twisting lianas, palms, ferns, and weird & wonderful flowers and to luckily see wild animals. A simple box Picnic lunch will be provided.

Afterward, leading to the feeding flat form where the orangutans are fed their twice-daily ration of bananas and milk. Watch the orangutan at the feeding site. Then, following a quite steep trail through the forest down to reach a bend in the river crossing by a cable and pulley-driven dug-out canoe. Then, proceed for walking back to the hotel for Accommodation. Lunch will be at the jungle with the simple traditional picnic lunch.

Day 3: Bahorok – Samosir Island
After breakfast at the lodge, at the appropriate time then proceed driving on the main road to Berastagi via Medan. Upon arrival in Medan then stop at The Church of Mary Annai Velangkanni; the uniqueness of the church lies in the originality of its Indo – Mogul architecture (Tamil Nadu), ornaments & displays of color resembling a towering temple.

Afterward proceed the drive on the forested foothills of the Bukit Barisan where s-turns provide a panoramic view to the delightfully cool and picturesque town of Berastagi through the Nature Reserved of Sibolangit, which lies on an escarpment overlooking the lowlands. On the way visit the Lumbini temple a Vietnamese Buddist temple at the Karo land area.

Afterward, proceed driving to Berastagi. Upon arrival in Berastagi, proceed driving to the Fruit Market selling wonderfully fresh fruits, flowers, vegetables & other goodies. Afterward driving to Gundaling Hill to observe both Sinabung & Sibayak mount panoramic views, before heading to the hotel overnight.

Then depart to Danau Toba, the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world. On the way, you will visit the spectacular Sipisopiso waterfall and also the restored Royal Palace in Pematang Purba to visit Batak Karo House with an open floor plan in which used to be related families live together under a single upswept or rectangular roof of juk thatch interspersed with more modern ones.

then continue to visit the unique town Parapat which is cool at night but warm during the day. Next, you will cruise to Samosir island and upon arrival, transfer to your hotel overnight.

NOTE:   Cocoa Plantation has been cut off and re-planted with other crops, which are rubber and oil palm.

Day 4: Explorer Samosir Island
After breakfast at the hotel, proceed for a day Samosir tour by Motor Bike to explore & surrounding the Island & its areas are the heart of Batak Toba tribe culture. It is a large volcanic island in Lake Toba and from here you can see the traditional villages along the shoreline. And enjoy the beauty of this famous island before continuing the fascinating trip to visit Ambarita, a traditional village known for the megalithic stone chairs, and also Simanindo Village to watch a folk dance performance by the native people. You will also visit Tomok village, a place famous for its main attraction, the Tomb of King Sidabutar, and visit the Hot Spring at Pangururan, then to kampung Parholoan (Parholoan village) for observing the panoramic viewing of whole the Island before returning to your hotel for overnight. Free for leisure Lunch at the local restaurant.

Day 5: Samosir Island – Kualanamu Airport
After breakfast at the hotel, then proceed to drive through the main road back to Medan, then transfer to Kualanamu Airport to catch the flight for onward destination.
