Visit Gunkanjima island, the Battleship island, in Nagasaki
Description
Gunkanjima (軍艦島), or "Battleship Island," is a small island located about 20 kilometers from Nagasaki Port. Until 1974, this 480-meter long, 150-meter wide island served as a thriving coal mine, with more than 5,000 residents creating the highest population density ever recorded worldwide.
Today, this abandoned island stands as a haunting reminder of Japan's industrial heritage and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
