TESSO NILO NATIONAL PARK INDONESIA

Description
Tesso Nilo National Park
Sumatra Elephant Conservation and Mahout Wanna Be
Tesso Nilo National Park is a lowland forest located in Central Sumatra, Riau Province, Indonesia. It home to the critically endangered Sumatran elephants and Sumatran tigers, and is also home to the largest coherent lowland rainforest remaining on Sumatra. Tesso Nilo National Park is reported to have the highest vascular plant diversity anywhere in the world and is a critical habitat for well over 100 elephants that represent about 10% of all remaining Sumatran elephants in the wild.
The Indonesian government established Tesso Nilo National Park in 2004, and it is presently managed by the Conservation Natural Resources Agency of Riau. This agency protects this small pocket of forest in a sea of palm oil and acacia plantations.
This park has proven one of our toughest conservation challenges. There are any pressures to open up the forest land for palm oil plantations. The palm oil plantations have affected the area for the past decade, which has resulted in the loss of over 50,000 hectares of this once 85,000 hectares national park.
Due to the great importance of the remaining park for the remaining elephants, Tesso Nilo National Park Agency is committed to fight on. The agency runs an extensive program focused on community engagement, wildlife patrolling, and mitigating human wildlife conflicts. For several years Tesso Nilo National Park Agency has operated an elephant patrol team and works together with stakeholders committed to support our elephants based in the park, what is called the “elephant flying squad” which helps mitigate elephant-human conflict and also patrols the area.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry work together with many stakeholders to solve the many challenges in and around Tesso Nilo. The palm oil companies around the park have committed to no longer receiving or purchasing palm fruit grown within the park. Tesso Nilo National Park Agency is involved with supporting economic development alternatives for local communities to produce wild honey (called “madu Sialang tree” and “madu trigona”).
You will find a new and different experience in Tesso Nilo National Park, including jungle trekking and the amazing treat of seeing the elephants. We will witness the various activities supported by TessoNilo National Park Agency. Take time with our activities and enjoy your time in nature.
