Ice Climbing Day in Pyhä Lapland

Description

Learn essential techniques and enjoy plenty of climbing on a stunning Tajukangas frozen wall right next to the Pyhä Ski Resort. While prior belaying experience is beneficial, it’s not a requirement to join.

This experience can be tailored to match your skill level and personal learning goals, ensuring a rewarding and unforgettable day on the ice.

Techniques to choose from:

  • Proper use of ice axes and crampons
  • Ice climbing movement, body positioning, and postural awareness
  • How to top-rope belay an ice climber
  • Evaluating the safety of an ice climb (water ice)
  • Common risks in ice climbing and how to prevent them
  • Preventing cold injuries
  • Essential knots and equipment
  • Building ice climbing anchors with ice screws

Duration: 8 hours (including a meal break, meal not included in the price). A light, nutritious meal by the bonfire can be purchased separately. Alternatively, participants can choose to dine indoors at a nearby restaurant.

Note: Pick-up from Luosto starts 30 minutes before departure. Pick-up from Pyhä locations starts 15 minutes before departure. If there are many customers at different pickup points, it is important to arrive on time and wait patiently for your own ride.

Know before you go

Suitable personal clothing for winter weather including proper (ski) gloves or mittens. Please also bring a balaclava or a simple woolen hat without bobble / pompom that will fit under climbing helmet. Complimentary hot berry beverages included. Please consider bringing some snacks like nuts, energy bars or chocolate (caution: keep chocolate in a pocket inside of your jacket, otherwise it will freeze).
