Description
Curepipe
Curepipe - Mauritian Creole pronunciation: [kiːəpip]) - is also known as La Ville-Lumière (The City of Light). Curepipe is a town in Mauritius, located in the Plaines Wilhems District, the eastern part also lies in the Moka District. Curepipe lies at a higher elevation, often referred to as the "Central Plateau".
Trou aux Cerfs
One of the famous natural tourist attractions in Mauritius is the Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano with a well-defined cone and crater. It is located about 1 kilometer from the town of Curepipe. The dormant, volcanic crater is around 605 meters above sea level, with a diameter of 350 meters and a depth of around 100 meters. Interestingly, Trou aux Cerfs
is also called ‘Murr’s Volcano’. Unlike the typical volcanic features, Trou aux Cerfs’ crater is surrounded by a vast area of lush forest consisting of indigenous plant species and some giant green pine trees. It is believed that the Trou aux Cerfs erupted once and has remained dormant for the last 700,000 years, experts believe that there is a potential chance for it to become active again.
Grand Bassin
Grand Bassin, also called Ganga Talao, is a sacred natural lake within an extinct volcano crater, about 550 metres above sea level. The lake represents the mighty Ganges river of India. According to a mythological story, it is believed that the water here is sourced from the sacred Ganges River in India. Taking a dip in this lake during the Shivratri festival is considered auspicious. Grand Bassin is tucked away in the mountains of the South West surrounded by colourful Hindu temples and gods. Ganga Talao is a major draw of crowds in Mauritius, with many people visiting the site to pray, meditate, see the local monkeys, or simply to walk by the lake and enjoy the gorgeous surrounding views.
Black River Gorges
The Black River Gorges National Park is the largest protected forest of Mauritius. The Black River Gorges Nature Reserve was constructed in order to save the natural vegetation of the island and make it one of the most important Mauritian sights. One can walk along the greenery and reach the highest point of the island, which is the Black River Peak. Famed for not just its unique wildlife, the gorge also offers countless vistas, waterfalls, and spectacular views, making it an absolute must-visit experience on a trip to Mauritius.
Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth
Nature has her own ways of piquing our curiosity and Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earth is one of those surreal things. Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth is one spectacular Geo Park destination, one of Mauritius’ most iconic attractions. Either for geology enthusiasts, nature lovers or those who simply want to understand more about this rare and impressive phenomenon, this is a unique experience. The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth is a relatively small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct colours (approximately red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow). Due to the tropical weather conditions, all water-soluble elements such as silicon dioxide have been washed out.
Rhumerie de Chamarel
Situated in the South West part of Mauritius, in the heart of a fertile valley, lies the Rhumerie de Chamarel, which is surrounded by vast sugarcane plantations growing in harmony with the pineapples and other tropical fruits nearby. Displaying a unique sense of warmth and authenticity, the Rhumerie de Chamarel Distillery welcomes you for an all-encompassing experience ranging from a guided visit of the distillery and rum tasting to a tasty meal at Petite Rivière. As a visitor of the Rum Distillery, you can marvel at its unique design which blends harmoniously with the spectacular surroundings where wood, natural stone and water provide a sense of communion with nature.
