Pure Bali Village Experience & Cooking - Jamu Class - VIP Transfer

Description

Pick up from your hotel by your driver and scenic drive through tropical landscape. Before you reach the small mountain village near Mt. Batukaru, you'll stop at a bustling flower market.
Start for a 20-minute walk along the beautiful rice terraces and your tour guide will explain all the exotic plants and fruits along the way. You will stop at the farmer's place and if you are lucky, you will see the farmer working in the rice field with his water buffalo - this is the traditional Balinese way of cultivating the fields. Sometimes the water buffalo rests by the lotus pond or can simply be found somewhere in the surrounding area.

Warm welcome by the Balikaru family and introduction to the traditional Balinese music by playing Rindik, which you can try by yourself. Enjoy a guided herb & spice garden tour and learn more about the different plants, fruits & vegetables, which are important for Balinese cooking but also in traditional medicine.

Start making Jamu, a more than 1000-year-old tradition in Indonesia, originally from Java. It's based on spices, mostly ginger plus other herbs & spices, and each family has its secret recipes passed from generation to generation. You'll prepare 2 different kinds of Jamu using traditional utensils, and afterwards, try for yourself how delicious the Jamus taste. But that´s not all about these power drinks: Balinese believe in their prevention of diseases.

Time to change the spot and “hop” from the Jamu pavilion to the cooking pavilion at our Paon Bali, the traditional Balinese open-air kitchen. Under the professional guidance of our Balikaru chef, you will become a chef yourself today. It's so easy, and you'll have lots of fun chopping, cooking, and stirring in the pot. You can conjure up these dishes together today at Paon Bali:

  • Beras Kencur: Indonesian spice & herb drink
  • Jamu Kunyit Jahe Asam: Turmeric-Ginger-Tamarind-Juice
  • Base Genap: Balinese Herb- & Spice Paste
  • Sambal Mbe: Spicy Chili Paste
  • Sambal Matah: Balinese Sambal
  • Tum Ayam: chicken meat with spices in Banana leave, steamed
  • Sate Lilit Chicken: minced chicken sate with Balinese spices, grilled
  • Tempeh Kecang: homemade fried tempeh in sweet soy sauce
  • Sayur Urap: mixed Balinese vegetables with herb paste and coconut
  • Sayur Paku (Pakis): traditional, Balinese fern
  • Dessert - traditional Balinese snack

Together with our chef, you'll have prepared a perfect lunch! And after so much "work," it's time to enjoy the homemade, authentic Balinese lunch in our Warung Balikaru.
After lunch you'll have enough power to give the farmer a helping hand to assist with planting rice. Don't be shy and try your best at this hard village work.
It's time to say goodbye to the Balikaru family. Don't forget to take a souvenir photo together. We'll send this to you with the cooking class certificate and all our recipes after your tour. Take an easy village walk, always downhill, and enjoy the picturesque view of the stunning mountains around the mighty Batukaru. Chat with the villagers along the way and learn more about the Balinese architecture and feng shui when visiting the traditional house.

Your walk ends at Belulang Hot Spring, the holy sulfur spring. Your driver awaits you and brings you back to your hotel.
