Discover Inishbofin Island Walking from Cleggan. Self Guided. Full day.

Description

Come explore magical Inishbofin (Island of the White Cow) off the coast of Connemara along the Wild Atlantic Way. Inishbofin has become the first Irish island to receive an international ecotourism award. The island is five miles long by three miles wide supporting activities such as tourism, farming and fishing.

This self-guided package includes a return ferry ticket from Cleggan to the island, a light lunch (soup & sandwiches) at a family run hotel on the island, a documentary about the island, walking maps around the West Quarter and return to the hotel for tea and scones.

Board the ferry at the small fishing village of Cleggan and take in the spectacular land and seascapes as you sail to this small island. Sailing into the harbour you will see the remains of Cromwell's 16th century barracks which was used as a prison for catholic priests from all over Ireland after the English Statute of 1585 declared them guilty of high treason. Walk the short distance from the ferry to the hotel, and enjoy some delicious homemade soup and sandwiches while watching a short video about the island explaining the fascinating heritage, history and geology of the island in brief. Then go for an invigorating self-guided walk around the scenic West Quarter Loop, with maps provided.

Inishbofin has a selection of official looped walks, two Green Coast awarded beaches, a dive centre, an equestrian centre, bicycle hire and many more activities and sites to see. The island is a great place for bird watching and the corncrake can be heard here every year. Inishbofin is a breeding site for many species of birds. Return to the hotel for some freshly brewed tea/coffee and freshly made homemade scones before either boarding the ferry back to the mainland.
