Private visit to Medina Azahara

Description

Medina Azahara, the sumptuous and mysterious city that Abd-al Rahman III ordered to be built at the foot of the Sierra Morena, eight kilometres from the capital of Córdoba, contains, even in its name, legendary stories. Popular tradition states that, having proclaimed himself caliph in 929 AD, and after eight years of reign, Abd al-Rahman III decided to build a palatine city in honour of his favourite, Azahara.

Abd al-Rahman spared no materials to achieve the desired effect: the insignia of the powerful kingdom he ruled. Rich violet and red marbles, gold and precious stones, in addition to the careful craftsmanship of the best stonemasons and the legendary Byzantine contributions, helped to raise the valued project.

The visit covers the entire palatine city on a guided walk where we can admire the Salón Rico, the mosque, the houses and the walled area, as well as the beautiful Jardín Alto. A complete visit of about 2.5 hours, including entrance fees. The meeting point is at the Interpretation Centre and from there we take a shuttle bus to the entrance of the archaeological complex.
