From Almeria: Alpujarra Day Trip

Description

Although the Alpujarra is usually automatically associated with Granada, the truth is that Almería is also part of this mythical region. Located in the far west of the province, overlooking the fertile Andarax valley - which runs between the Sierra de Gádor and Sierra Nevada - the Alpujarra of Almería forms a homogeneous group of 22 municipalities, deeply linked to the historical presence of Muslim communities in the region. The spectacular mountainous environment, in many cases located at more than 2,000 metres above sea level, contrasts extraordinarily with the image associated with Almería, based, above all, on endless deserts and vast seas of plastic.

Our route takes in some of the most important towns in the region. We will visit Laujar de Andarax, capital of the region where water is the protagonist, and we will visit the historic centre on an urban walk to discover the uniqueness of its houses. We continue towards Alhama de Almeria. This town has a fascinating history, built first by the Romans, and later by the Arabs. This is demonstrated by the huge number of archaeological remains found in the area, such as “La Puente”, an exceptionally well-preserved Roman viaduct. Among other stops, we will end with Fondón; famous for housing one of the most valued architectural treasures of the Alpujarra. It is the palace house of the Godoya family, a sumptuous building built between the 17th and 18th centuries, commissioned by one of the Castilian noble families who came to repopulate the Alpujarra after the expulsion of the Moors in 1571.
