The Lava Tunnel and Black Beach ATV tour

Description

Make the most of your time in Iceland by exploring the black volcanic south coast on an ATV and then take a walk through the extraordinary Lava Tunnel. On this self-drive tour, you will, among others, drive around the wonderful black sand beach, watch the waves of the blue North Atlantic ocean, take a guided tour into a 5200-year-old Lava Tunnel and take a scenic route inland with amazing views. This combination offers a full day of fun that can either end back in Reykjavík for a dinner or as a continued ride along the south coast.

As this is a self-drive tour, you control the pace. We recommend being at the ATV tour at 9:45 am for the 10 o’clock tour. After leaving the city a bit before 8 am you can start your day off by taking a beautiful route on road 42, where you’ll find many of the most fascinating sights of the Reykjanes Peninsula. These include Kleifarvatn and Seltún geothermal area, as well as Strandarkirkja church. This will give you time for a few photos and relaxing views before getting your adrenaline pumping on the ATV’s.

The Black Beach ATV Tour takes you along the black sand beaches which the south of Iceland is most known for. You will be able to ride along the beach, enjoying the view of the north Atlanic ocean, and also ride a bit inland for a senice view of the country side. The ATV tour is about 1 hour and is sure to get your heart going for the rest of the day.

After the ATV tour, we recommend hitting up one of the restaurants in the area which specializes in Lobster Soup and other Icelandic delicacies. Our top picks for the region are Hendur í Höfn, Við Fjöruborðið & Rauða Húsið. Once you have gathered energy after the ATV ride, you can head up to The Lava Tunnel for the 1 pm tour. The drive should only be a few minutes (15 minutes top) from wherever you end up grabbing lunch in the region.

At The Lava Tunnel you will be joined by a guide that will take you into the 5200-year-old lava tube. The impressive award-winning lighting in the tunnel highlights the dynamic colors and enhances the experience. You will tread the same path as the lava flowed thousands of years ago where you will be able to sense first hand the immense power of the volcanic activity that formed the tunnel. The tour takes about 55-60 minutes and you will be provided with all necessary safety equipment. If you decide to go back to Reykjavík after the walk through The Lava Tunnel we recommend taking route 39/1 and visiting the Geothermal Energy Exhibition at Hellisheiðarvirkjun. And if the plan is to continue east, along the south coast, there are countless options of amazing sites in every direction.
