It soon developed into a favorite holiday destination for the Roman elite, and during the Imperial age many wealthy families who supported Augustus chose to build their residences here. Important public buildings such as the Temple of Fortuna Augusta and the Eumachia Building date back to this flourishing period.

You will walk along the famous Via dell’Abbondanza, once one of the most lively streets in Pompeii. Lined with taverns, bakeries, workshops, laundries, greengrocers and private houses, this main decumanus passed near the Forum and the Comitium and was at the very heart of the city’s daily life from the early hours of the morning.

As you explore houses, shops, public spaces and streets still marked by cart tracks, your guide will explain how the city suddenly came to a halt when Vesuvius erupted, and how the ash and pumice preserved Pompeii for centuries.

At the end of the guided visit, you will have some free time (if included in your program) before meeting your group again and returning to Naples, where the tour will end at the original meeting point.
